Where do I even start? This book was incredible. Now, I might be a bit biased because I've met the author and spoken to her many times, but this book, truly is a work of art.
Calisto Terana is a love sick man who wanted a second chance to love his Tala. He became a Night Walker and waited for centuries until Kate Bradley came along. She was the reincarnation of Calisto's true love. How sweet is that?
Calisto's real name is Gregorio Salvador, very Spanish indeed. He loved eternally and he was given the chance to live forever to wait for Kate. When she came along, he tried so hard to not scare her off by telling her how much he loved her right from the start. There were many times when I could feel his uneasiness and the impatience that tortured him when he couldn't touch her the way he used to. Despite his hunger for her love, he stayed sensible, patient, and as human as he possibly could be.
Kate struggled with the dreams of her past life not knowing the dreams were connected to her. I think her life had been in such a roller coaster since she met Calisto. It was amazing how she didn't go insane or tried to run away. Instead, she chose to follow her heart and her heart led her back to Calisto every time.
The villain of the story was a monk named Jose Mentigo. Gah, I hated him. He was SO SICK. He was so disgusting. I mean, I love vampires and I had a phase when I reveled in the "beauty" of their blood-drinking, but this guy was just sick. He seriously licked at drops of blood - his own and other's - and enjoyed it, and he was still human. That's really gross. And then he raped while he killed a woman. That is just demonic. I was so happy when Calisto ripped his heart out. It reminded me of Damon from the Vampire Diaries TV show. Totally amazing and I was satisfied :)
What I liked the most about Calisto was his humanity. Even without a soul, he had a good heart. "He fed on the refuse of humanity: killers, drug lords, and child abusers, then gave his victims' bodies to the sea" (page 15). When I was in my I-wish-I-could-be-a-vampire phase, that was how I planned to live, and reading about how he was able to live like that, was truly amazing to me. I also loved his primal instincts and mannerisms. When he's angry or hungry, he's vicious, and for some reason, it was really sexy ;)
I didn't know Calisto had humor as well. There are certain parts when he's so serious and yet, to me, it was hilarious!
Calisto: "You made it clear you did not want to discuss the past with him, I followed through on your request."
Kate: "By beating him senseless?"
Calisto: "Perhaps he never had any sense to begin with."
page 123: "In all his years, he had never driven an automobile. The closest he had come was watching various assistants through the years as they chauffeured him. He wasn't sure he could even remember how to start the car..."
One thing that I loved/hated about Calisto was that he cared so much, he would do whatever it takes to protect Kate, including hurting her and letting her go.
Kate: "You really expect me to be happy without you?"
Calisto: "Yes I do. You are an amazing woman, and you will be an incredible mother."
It is infuriating that I've heard that line said to me before (minus the mother reference) and I had pretty much the same reaction as Kate: upset. Another reason I loved this book was because Kate vocalized things I wished I could have said in my real life.
This is probably the longest review I've ever written. I wanted to be very specific and hope that I convinced whoever is reading this to go get the book and devour it as soon as possible. Need I mention how many stars I give this book?
