GLOBAL NEWS: WORLD ENVIROMENTAL DAY 2012

World Environment Day (WED) will be observed all over the world today to create a public awareness among the people for the global environmental concerns. World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June with an objective to raise global awareness among the common people to take positive environmental action to reduce the degradation of environment. It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) every year since 1973.
Due to progressive climate change and other environmental concerns, there is a continuous deterioration in the environment across the globe and is one of the primary concern of present world. United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment by using World Environment Day as a tool to bring awareness among people to save environment.
Like every year, this year's theme for World Environment Day is: Green Economy: Does it include you? And the host for World Environment Day 2012 is the Federative Republic of Brazil. According to the definition of UNEP, a Green Economy is 'one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.'

Practically, a green economy is that in which the income of people is driven by the private and public investments which helps in the reduction of carbon emissions and pollution and stimulates energy and resource efficiency, and ultimately helps in the prevention of loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Therefore, with a view to save the environment, it is very important to stimulate and support public expenditure, policy reforms and regulation changes.

Continuous deterioration in the environment has led to many major environmental concerns such as unexpected climatic conditions and climate change, melting of glaciers, increasing greenhouse effect, loss of flora and fauna and much more and hence needs a joint initiative to control the ongoing imbalance in the environment.

World Environment Day 2012 will celebrate its 40th anniversary of the event this year which was first established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
